“How long should my battery last?” is the question we hear most at our Randwick workshop. The short answer: four to five years with good care — but several Sydney-specific factors can shorten that to three years or less.
What shortens battery life in Sydney
Heat
Heat is harder on batteries than cold. Sydney summers accelerate the chemical wear inside a battery and speed up evaporation. A battery parked in the sun all day ages faster than one kept in a garage.
Short trips
Lots of short Eastern Suburbs trips — to Coogee, down to Maroubra, around Bondi — never give the alternator enough time to fully recharge the battery. Chronic undercharging is one of the biggest hidden causes of early battery failure.
Start-Stop driving
City traffic means constant Start-Stop cycling. If your car has Start-Stop, it needs an EFB or AGM battery designed for that duty — a standard battery simply won’t last.
How to make your battery last longer
- Drive longer occasionally. A weekly longer drive helps the alternator top the battery up fully.
- Turn off accessories before starting. Reduce the load at the moment of highest demand.
- Keep terminals clean. Corrosion increases resistance and strains the battery.
- Get a free battery check once a year. Catching a weak battery early beats being stranded.
When to replace
If your battery is over three years old, showing warning signs, or you’ve needed a jump start, have it tested. At Randwick Car Batteries the test is free, and if you need a replacement we supply and fit the right Bosch or Energizer battery on the spot.
